Fiona Rogerson – Perinatal and Trauma Counselling

for Dads

You can’t quite put your finger on it, but something inside you feels off, like you’re not the same person you were before. You want to be there for your partner and baby, but it feels like there’s a barrier you just can’t break through.

Behind the brave face you show, you’re grappling with feelings of powerlessness, frustration, fear, or maybe even shame. You might be replaying parts of the birth in your mind, or feeling a distance between you and your loved ones that you can’t seem to bridge. And then there’s that nagging thought: Why am I feeling this way? I didn’t go through it; she did.

It feels like no one really sees what you’re going through. You don’t want to burden anyone or be seen as weak, so you keep it to yourself. But facing this alone is wearing you down, leaving you feeling isolated and unsure. You just want someone to hear you and help you find a way to feel whole again.

Or maybe as his partner, you know he’s struggling but don’t know how to help him.

I understand. You’re not alone in this, and we’re here to help.

Birth Trauma Counselling for Dads

Becoming a father is supposed to be a joyous occasion, but when the birth experience is traumatic, it can leave deep scars. As a dad, you may feel a sense of responsibility to stay strong for your family, yet you’re struggling with feelings of fear, guilt, or even resentment. You might be haunted by the images of what you witnessed, feeling disconnected from your partner and baby, or questioning your own worth as a father.

Birth trauma isn’t just something that affects mothers; it can profoundly impact dads too, leaving you feeling lost and unsure of where to turn.

How can birth trauma counselling for dads help?

Birth trauma counselling for Dads not only offers you a safe space to explore and understand the intense emotions you’re experiencing, but we utilise practical tools and approaches to address and resolve the difficulties you’re facing. Through therapies such as EMDR, we practically work to process the distressing memories, emotions and thoughts around your experience that are holding you back.

These approaches not only reduce feelings of guilt, powerlessness, or inadequacy but also to help you regain control over your thoughts and reactions. You’ll be strengthened to reconnect with your partner and baby, improve your confidence as a dad, and move forward without the burden of unresolved trauma, thriving as the father and partner you want to be.

We can support you through:
• PTSD
• Birth trauma counselling for dads and partners
• Birth debriefing for dads and partners
• Prenatal and postnatal anxiety for dads and partners
• Unplanned pregnancy
• Fertility difficulties and infertility
• Loss of identity, self-esteem or self-confidence

Our approach

The idea of coming to a counselling session can be daunting, especially when you’re already feeling the weight of your experience. We understand that, as a man, opening up to a counsellor can feel particularly challenging—you might be anxious about sharing your feelings, unsure if counselling can actually help, or worried about being judged. Just considering counselling as a way to get help is a significant step, and it’s something you should be proud of. Knowing what to expect from our first session might help ease some of those nerves.

When we meet for the first time, it will be in a space that ensures confidentiality, so you can speak freely without concern. We’ll start by going over the formalities—things like session timings, paperwork, my role, your role, and how confidentiality works. I’ll also explain my integrative psychotherapeutic approach, so you have a clear understanding of what the process will look like. From there, we’ll begin to unpack what’s been troubling you. Whether you know exactly what you want to work on or you’re struggling with a general sense of unease, we’ll work together to clarify and understand what’s going on. We’ll use a series of questions to help us get a comprehensive view of your situation, and this exploration will continue throughout our sessions as we delve into what’s happening, how it’s affecting you, and how we can work toward meaningful change. Together, we’ll also develop a strategic plan for moving forward, so you leave each session with a clear sense of direction.

We’re here to listen, to really hear you, to support you, and to help you move to where you want to be – as person, a partner, and a dad.
