Is EMDR therapy right for me? A guide for mums healing from birth trauma
Many of the mums we work with (after birth trauma) come in experiencing frequent distress, from the sudden shaky hands when they hear a hospital ad on the radio, to the way their body tenses walking past a maternity ward, or the guilt that creeps in when they think they should be “over it by now”.
If you’re noticing these reactions months or even years after the birth, you’re not alone, and these are signs that there is unprocessed trauma stored in your body and nervous system.
Eye Movement Desensitisation Therapy (EMDR) for birth trauma is one of the therapeutic tools we use to help your nervous system release what it has been holding, so you can feel more like yourself again.
This guide will walk you through what EMDR is, why it works, and how it can support your healing after a traumatic birth.
Understanding birth trauma (and why your body still holds it)
Birth trauma isn’t always about a single moment, a medical emergency, or something others can clearly see from the outside.
It can be:
- Experiencing a loss of control at any point from conception through to postpartum
- Feeling unheard or dismissed
- A moment where you felt powerless or unsafe
- A frightening or unplanned medical intervention
- A traumatic pregnancy or postpartum
- A birth that looked “fine” on paper but didn’t feel fine in your body.
Trauma lives in the body and the nervous system. When trauma hasn’t been fully processed, your body and brain remain partly stuck in the past, switched on and hypervigilant, ready to protect you from further potential danger.EMDR therapy can help your nervous system to finally complete that interrupted process.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR is an evidence-based trauma therapy that supports people to process and heal distressing memories, body sensations, beliefs, and emotional imprints from past events.
It is a structured process to work with memories of events or experiences, bodily or somatic sensations, core self beliefs, and emotions. The aim of treatment is to lessen the intensity of the emotional, bodily, and thought remnants of painful past experiences.
EMDR for birth trauma works to lessen the magnitude or severity of the continued experience of that memory without eliminating the memory itself. It works immediately and can reduce trauma symptoms, such as flashbacks, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and intrusive memories, quickly.
Many people describe EMDR as life-changing, because it allows healing at the level where trauma actually lives: the nervous system.
How does EMDR help after birth trauma?
Birth trauma often creates loops in the brain and body, which can show up as:
- Flashbacks
- Nightmares
- Intrusive thoughts
- Anxiety or panic
- Hypervigilance (being “on edge”)
- Difficulties bonding with baby
- Body memories or medical phobias
- Shame or guilt
- Avoidance of anything related to birth
- Overwhelm
- Perfectionism in parenting
- Lack of confidence or self-belief
EMDR therapy helps the brain connect the traumatic memory with new information: your current safety, your strength, your supports, your present reality, so you no longer live as though the traumatic moment is still happening.
For many mothers, EMDR brings:
- A deep sense of relief
- The ability to remember the birth without panic or shame
- A calmer nervous system
- More emotional capacity for parenting
- A renewed sense of connection with themselves or their baby
- Greater trust in their body.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
EMDR follows eight structured phases, but much of the early work is focused on safety, resourcing, and preparing your nervous system.Your therapist won’t rush you, especially when working with birth trauma, postpartum vulnerability, and nervous system overwhelm.
You can expect:
1. A thorough assessment
You’ll explore what feels distressing, what your goals are, and what’s happening in your body and nervous system.
2. Stabilisation and resourcing
Before touching the trauma, you’ll learn grounding and regulation tools that help you feel safe and in control.
3. Identifying target memories
These may include moments from pregnancy, the birth, postpartum, medical experiences, or earlier life experiences that the birth brought to the surface.
4. Bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sound)
This is the “processing” stage where the brain reworks the traumatic memory in a safe, guided way.
5. Reprocessing and installation of new beliefs
You gradually integrate new, more adaptive beliefs, such as “I am safe now”, “I did my best”, or “It wasn’t my fault”.
6. Closing sessions safely
Each session ends with grounding and stabilisation so you leave feeling contained and grounded before leaving.
How do I know if EMDR therapy is right for me after birth trauma?
Here are some signs EMDR may support you:
- You avoid thinking or talking about your birth. Certain moments may feel too overwhelming or too much.
- Your body still reacts as though the trauma is happening now. You may experience panic, tightness, nausea, shaking, emotional floods, or dissociation.
- You feel stuck, even though part of you wants to move forward.
- You want relief that talk therapy alone hasn’t been able to bring. Many clients say EMDR helps reach what their body has been holding.
- You’re noticing impacts on connection, bonding, or your sense of self.
- You feel safe enough in your life to do trauma work.
Common concerns mums have about EMDR
“Will EMDR make me fall apart?” No. EMDR is paced with your present life, supports, and nervous system in mind. You’re never thrown into the deep end.
“Do I have to remember everything?” No. Your brain leads the way. You don’t have to recount anything in detail unless you choose to.
“Can EMDR work even if my birth was years ago?” Yes. Trauma can sit in the nervous system for decades. EMDR works at any stage.
“Is EMDR safe postpartum?” With a trained perinatal trauma therapist, who understands how to use trauma-informed protocols with EMDR, yes. Your emotional, physical, and parenting needs are always considered.
Why EMDR can be so transformative for birth trauma
When something frightening or overwhelming happens, your brain’s normal processing can’t complete. EMDR helps the brain finish what it started, restoring a sense of safety and coherence.
After EMDR therapy, mums have said:
- “I can breathe again.”
- “It finally feels like it’s over.”
- “I can remember the birth without shutting down.”
- “I feel like myself again.”
This is why EMDR is one of the therapies often used for processing birth trauma.
How to choose an EMDR therapist for birth trauma
It’s important to work with a therapist who:
- is fully trained and certified in EMDR (and EMDR protocols for trauma)
- understands perinatal mental health
- has specific training in birth trauma
- works in a trauma-informed, body-aware way
- makes you feel safe, heard, and respected.
The relationship with your therapist also matters as much as the modality. Finding someone who you trust and feel comfortable to be open with is extremely important.
So, if you’ve been living with the impact of a traumatic birth, please know that you don’t have to keep holding the memories or sensations alone. You don’t have to hold it all together through something that was never meant to be carried in silence. Healing from birth trauma is possible.
